Through My Lens: Scotland’s Castle Ruins
In September 2019, I decided to track down the ruins of Dalquharran Castle.
You can’t see it from the road, but I knew it was hidden somewhere in the trees—so I parked up, followed a narrow track, and wandered through thick woodland until I found it.
What’s left of the castle is haunting and beautiful. Completely gutted inside. Crumbling walls, collapsed floors, and ivy creeping in from every direction. And yet, right in the middle of it all, this light-filled window stopped me in my tracks.
It was the one part that felt like the castle was still trying—like it hadn’t fully given up yet.

🔍 How I Took This Image
📷 Camera: Nikon D3200
📆 Time of Year: September
🕒 Time of Day: Early afternoon
📍 Location: Dalquharran Castle, South Ayrshire, Scotland
🎨 Editing: I can’t remember the exact app, but I brightened the light coming through the window, deepened the greens to make the moss pop, and softened some of the shadows to balance the texture and contrast.
