A 3-Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

If you’re wondering why Italy has such a magnetic pull on me, you’re about to find out.

Italy isn’t just a destination; it’s my love affair. I’ve explored all the big cities, well-known places, and countless out-of-the-way places, and I have no plans to stop anytime soon.

From the very first time I set foot in Italy, I was hooked. Italy has the ability to make you feel right at home, whether you’re sipping espresso or getting lost in the charming alleyways of historic villages.
The more I explored, the more I fell in love, and now, my heart firmly belongs to this insanely beautiful and friendly country.

The Amalfi Coast is Italy’s ultimate dream destination—a place with dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and beautiful seaside towns.

You’ll visit the sun-drenched beaches of Positano and other great places such as Amalfi and Ravello. Whether you’re going to eat your way through Italy, learn centuries of history, or just kick back and soak up the breath-taking views, these three days are packed with experiences that’ll have you dreaming about the Amalfi Coast long after you’ve left.

3 Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary

If you’re planning a short visit to the area, consider following this 3-day Amalfi Coast itinerary that will have you soaking up the best the coast has to offer.

Day 1: Positano

Start your adventure with the first day of this Amalfi Coast itinerary by exploring the iconic town of Positano.

Morning

Before heading out to start your day of adventure, stop at La Zagara. This is a great place to grab coffee and pastry, and the views are incredible.

– Hike The Path Of The Gods

If you’re up for some adventure, this scenic hike offers breath-taking panoramic views of the coast. It’s about 2-4 hours, depending on your pace, but totally worth it.

Late Morning

Stroll through the colourful streets of Positano

Positano is one of the most beautiful towns along the coast.
Take your time exploring the winding alleys lined with fashionable boutiques, art galleries, and ceramic shops.

A scenic view of the coastal town of Positano, with colorful buildings cascading down the hillside toward the blue Mediterranean Sea. The intricate dome of a church stands out in the foreground.

Don’t leave your camera behind because this postcard-worthy town will have you taking hundreds of pictures.

Visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Step inside to admire the stunning Byzantine Black Madonna and the impressive dome visible from almost anywhere in town.

Lunch

Lunch at Da Adolfo (accessible by boat)

Hop on a boat and head to the beachside Da Adolfo for fresh seafood with your feet in the sand.
Try their grilled mozzarella on lemon leaves – seriously good!

Head to the Positano Pier (Spiaggia Grande) – Walk down to the main beach, where you’ll find the pier and the boat service for Da Adolfo.

Look for the boat with the red fish sign – Da Adolfo operates a free shuttle service to its restaurant. The boat has a distinctive red fish on the mast, so keep an eye out for it.

Board the boat to Laurito Beach. The boat ride takes about 10-15 minutes and will drop you off at Laurito Beach, where Da Adolfo is located.
Make sure you’ve made a reservation beforehand, as it can get quite busy.

Afternoon

Relax at Spiaggia Grande or Fornillo Beach

Both beaches are free, and if you want a quieter beach after all that walking and hiking to unwind, I’d opt for Fornillo Beach.
It’s easy to get to and reachable by foot. You will need to start at the Spiaggia Grande pier and go from there.

Spiaggia Grande is a smaller, more lively beach at the base of Positano.

A close-up shot of the picturesque town of Positano, showing tightly packed buildings in shades of yellow, red, and white perched on the cliffs above a black sand beach.
Afternoon spritz at Franco’s Bar

One of the trendiest spots with panoramic views, Franco’s Bar is perfect for people-watching and sipping on an Aperol Spritz as the sun starts to dip.
Please note that this establishment does not take reservations, and all seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Evening

Dinner at Ristorante La Sponda

A one-minute walk from Franco’s Bar, enjoy a candlelit dinner with an unforgettable sea view.
La Sponda is a Michelin-starred restaurant and very much worth the splurge. The ambiance is perfect for a romantic evening, complete with Mediterranean flavours. Make reservations in advance.

Evening stroll and gelato

Nothing tops an after-dinner gelato. Stop at any gelateria on your way back to your hotel and enjoy the stunning twinkling lights view of Positano.

This historic villa and its stunning gardens were built in the 13th century.
The terraced gardens offer breath-taking views high above the Amalfi Coast.

A row of gothic-style stone columns lining the cloister of a historic building, with light streaming in and small plants adding a pop of green to the weathered stonework.

Take your time wandering through the gardens and enjoying the unbeatable view of the coastline. The Ravello Festival and many concerts are also held here. Visit this site for a list of events.

Explore Villa Cimbrone

Just a short walk away, Villa Cimbrone offers more gardens and the famous “Terrace of Infinity,” which might be one of the best views you’ll ever see. I promise!

Lunch

Head to this family-owned winery, Casa Vinicola Ettore Sammarco Ravello, to enjoy an incredible wine tasting.
This winery produces a range of wines, but it’s mainly known for its Falanghina, Fiano, and Aglianico varietals.

Evening

Dinner at Ristorante Vittoria

This is a great restaurant where you can enjoy fantastic cuisine without breaking the bank. There are lots of seafood options.
If you would like to enjoy some amazing pizza, head to Mimí Pizzeria & Cucina. You won’t be disappointed with this option either.

Amalfi Coast Food – What To Try

Think fresh everything when it comes to the Amalfi Coast’s cuisine. It’s all about the freshest catches of the day, with citric tastes from the Amalfi lemons.
Everything is fresh, light, and full of the best tastes that the Mediterranean has to offer.

Maybe just as good as the views along the Amalfi Coast are some amazing dishes, which are a must while visiting the coast. Below is a list of some of my favourites:

  • Delizia al Limone – This is a traditional dessert on the Amalfi Coast. It consists of a light cake and limoncello with a hard outer shell.
  • Mozzarella di Bufala – This mozzarella is a mix of Bufala and Fior di Latte.
A beautifully plated dessert with dollops of cream and swirls of apricot puree, garnished with crushed pistachios. The dessert's elegant presentation reflects the culinary sophistication of the Amalfi Coast.
  • Gli Scialatielli all’Amalfitana – This is a mix of Calamari, Clams, Mussels and Shrimp. These items are mixed with pasta, similar to spaghetti but are fatter and shorter than spaghetti.
  • Pasta al limone – Pasta in lemon sauce.
  • ‘Ndunderi – Fresh ricotta cheese and tomato sauce and basil. This dish is from the coastal town of Minori.
